Living in Costa Rica we have become quiet fond of open air living. One level walk out living with all of the windows and doors wide open welcomes the outdoors in! The way our home faces south toward the Pacific Ocean opening the front door lets in the most refreshing breeze and opening the back door on the south end of the house helps to pull the breeze through. This along with all of the sliding doors open to the courtyard pool gives you that wonderful feeling of being outside in the fresh air as you listen to the trickling water from the pool fountain!
We truly love our neighbors but there is just a feeling of vulnerability when you are piddling about your house with the front door standing wide open. We had noticed throughout Costa Rica that many homes are enclosed with iron fencing and bars on the windows. So we decided to add this interesting feature to our Casa in an artistic way to make it comfortable to have the windows and doors open yet add to the beauty of our home.
Now bear in mind that we are Americans after all and when it comes time to retire to the bedroom for a good nights sleep we turn on that wonderful contraption in the wall called an air conditioner and sleep in the nice comfort of cold air but it is nice to leave the windows open in the living area so that when we get up in the morning it is nice and cool throughout the house. But we just did not feel secure leaving the windows open with only the screens.
And then we were blessed with William! We were talking to Juan who takes such wonderful care of our pool and he shared with us that his Uncle was an ironsmith and did the ironwork for the homes in the area. We invited William to our home via Juan and after communicating with our Spanglish and a few drawings on paper (William only speaks Spanish) we came up with a lovely design that we thought would compliment our home.
What do you think?

Isn't it beautiful! William is a true artist! We are very pleased with his work and highly recommend him. We also got him to come back and add a fence to enclose our courtyard. He was very happy to offer a great big smile when I asked to take his picture!
Now I am sure you are thinking "But what about the bugs?" Oh yes there are a few of those that find their way in along with a frog, a beautiful hummingbird, a sleepy bat and our pet lizard J.C. but after all we are in Costa Rica living the Pura Vida! If you have the time please feel free to click on the highlighted names of each creature to read their personal story!
