Sticky Sweet, Seasonal Snacks!

 It is that wonderful time of year again when the mamon chino trees are heavily laden with this fascinating spiny fruit that is so much fun to crack open and chew on the amazing pulp that is found inside!  While enjoying a drive in the countryside you will find many roadside fruit stands boasting their supply of this popular fruit that hangs in bunches still on the tree stems because this keeps it fresher until it is eaten or used to make jams and jellies.  

This precious Tica girl caught our eye as she waved at us as we passed beckoning us to consider the harvest that she and her mamá had to offer.  We were happy to stop and purchase a nice bunch from her at the bargain price of only 1000 colones which is only $2.

This was also the first time I had seen this yellow variety of the mamon chino that in Costa Rica is known as "wild" rambutan!  To learn more about mamon chinos please read my previous blogpost

And just to clarify....  they are only sugar syrupy, juicy sticky 

... not prickly sticky!
